Songs: Forgiveness Is A Cuckoo
notes / gigs / releasesForgiveness is a cuckoo
That lays inside the brain
And eats the thoughts that otherwise
Might be consumed by hate
It needs a lot of feeding
And it leaves a lot of mess
When It leaves to breed with other birds
It heard without the nest
An empty bed of eggshells
Is all it leaves behind
Which magpies take to decorate
The inside of the mind
So that in another summer
When the crows and rooks bear down
They'll be bedazzled by the light
Of all the thoughts we found
And even if a cuckoo
Means that other birds have died
The call of every cuckoo
Is worth writing in The Times
Forgiveness is a cuckoo
That lays inside the brain
And eats the thoughts that otherwise
Might be consumed by hate

Lying in bed one night I was thinking about the hard time my brother was having, and how the whole process of getting over Things, and Letting Go, was a lot harder than it ought to be... the first verse of this one then popped out, and I didn't get to sleep for another hour while I worked the rest.
This, I believe, is Frankie Machine's LEAST favourite song I have ever written, and he often cites it as an example of the sort of stuff I would probably be releasing if The Validators weren't there to stop me!
